How this is calculated

Compound interest formula: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t)

Where P is your deposit, r is the annual interest rate, n is how many times a year interest is compounded, and t is the tenure in years. Interest earned = A − P.

Actual amounts credited will be net of Withholding Tax deducted by the bank.

Frequently asked questions

How is FD interest calculated?

The calculator uses compound interest: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t), where r is the annual rate, n is compounding frequency and t is the tenure in years.

Is FD interest taxed in Sri Lanka?

Yes, banks typically deduct Withholding Tax (WHT) on interest at the prevailing rate. Confirm the current rate and any thresholds with your bank.

Monthly vs at-maturity interest?

Compounding more frequently (monthly) gives slightly higher returns than annual or at-maturity payout, all else equal.

Can I withdraw before maturity?

Most banks allow premature withdrawal with a penalty on the interest rate. This calculator assumes you hold to maturity.
