Gold price today in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna & other cities
The gold rate is the same across Sri Lanka. Whether you buy in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Negombo, Kurunegala, Jaffna, Matara, Batticaloa or Anuradhapura, jewellers work from the same daily market rate — the international London gold price converted to LKR that morning. What actually differs between cities and shops is the making charge (typically 8–15% for machine-made jewellery, 15–25% for hand-crafted work) and small differences in the shop's daily premium. Always ask for a bill that lists the metal weight, karat, and making charge separately so you can compare like-for-like.
Gold pawning rate today in Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan banks and licensed pawnbrokers issue a gold loan (pawning) against the value of your jewellery — typically 70–85% of the market value per sovereign (pawun / 8g of 22K). At today's 22K 8g rate of Rs. 335,300, that works out to roughly Rs. 234,710 to Rs. 285,005 advance per pawun, depending on the bank's advance ratio, purity assay, and current interest rate. Advance rates and interest differ between Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank, Commercial Bank, Sampath Bank, HNB, Seylan Bank and licensed pawnbrokers — always compare 2–3 offers, and ask for a written receipt that states weight, karat, appraised value, advance amount, interest rate and redemption date.
Today's gold selling price in Sri Lanka
When you sell old gold jewellery, buyers pay the metal value only — you do not recover the making charges you originally paid. Most jewellers and gold buyers quote a selling rate that is 3–8% below the market rate shown above, and they deduct for any stones, solder or damage. As a rough guide, at today's rate of Rs. 335,300 per pawun of 22K, expect a buy-back offer of around Rs. 308,476 to Rs. 325,241 per pawun before any deductions. Weigh your gold at home first, get quotes from at least 2–3 licensed buyers, and prefer a shop that hallmark-tests the piece in front of you.
What is a pawun?
A pawun (sovereign) in Sri Lanka is 8 grams of 22K gold. It's the standard unit for wedding jewellery and the number every jeweller uses to quote a rate.
24K vs 22K vs 21K
24K is 99.9% pure — best for investment (coins, bars). 22K (91.6%, "916") is the standard for wearable jewellery. 21K (87.5%) is slightly harder and cheaper.
Why shop price is higher
The metal value is only part of the ticket price. Add making charges (8–25%), VAT where applicable, and any stone-setting cost. Ask for the bill to show these separately.
How this rate is calculated
International London gold price (USD per troy ounce) → converted at today's USD → LKR rate → plus a local premium (~2.5%) that covers import duty and trade margin.
Questions about gold in Sri Lanka
- What is the price of 22 carat 8g gold in Sri Lanka today?
- The indicative 22K 8g (one pawun / sovereign) gold rate is shown in the table above and is updated automatically every morning. Actual jeweller prices include making charges on top of the metal value.
- How much is half a pawn (4 grams) of gold today?
- Half a pawn is 4 grams of 22K gold. The indicative rate is shown in the units table above and is simply four times the 22K per-gram rate.
- What was the gold price yesterday in Sri Lanka?
- Yesterday's 22K 8g rate is shown in the 'Gold price history' table above, together with the last 30 days of daily rates for 24K, 22K and 21K.
- Has the gold price gone up or down this week in Sri Lanka?
- The daily change (▲/▼ vs yesterday) is shown next to the headline price above, and the 30-day high, low and average appear in the stats box below the history table — use these to see the direction of movement this week.
- Which is better to buy — 22K or 24K gold?
- 24K is 99.9% pure and best for investment (coins, bars). 22K (91.6% pure) is the standard for Sri Lankan jewellery because pure gold is too soft to hold a design. If you plan to wear it, buy 22K; if you plan to store value, buy 24K.
- Why does the shop price differ from the rate shown here?
- Shops add making charges (typically 8–15% for machine-made, 15–25% for hand-crafted), VAT where applicable, and their own daily premium. Our figure is the indicative metal value only — always confirm with your jeweller.
- When is the best time of day to buy gold?
- International gold trades 24/5 and Sri Lankan shops set their morning rate from the London AM fix. Prices are usually most stable between 10am and 2pm local time; avoid buying right after big US inflation or interest-rate news.
- How do I check if gold is genuine before buying?
- Look for the 916 hallmark stamp (22K) or 999 (24K), ask for a bill that lists weight and karat separately, and buy from an NGJA-registered jeweller who will buy the piece back. If a deal looks too cheap versus today's rate, it usually is.
